The First Cup

Hello Webfolks,

Like the first cup of coffee in the morning I hope that this blog will be something you look forward to, enjoy the taste of, and indulge in often with little or no regrets. Various topics dealing with 'hot' cultural issues, church, religion, Jesus, culture (and isn't this a loaded word nowadays?) and even occasionally good coffee will be some of the fiery topics covered.

I have the privilege of being the spiritual leader for a great group of people in Portland Oregon. They call themselves Immanuel Christian Fellowship and although I have been with them only a short period of time I have come to enjoy sharing the journey with them. They sing songs filled with hope and love, songs about brokenness and life, and most importantly songs about God. They laugh and cry, they love and hate, they walk and they sit down and take a rest from the trip regularly. They dance (I haven't actually seen them do this. However in hushed whispers they have discussed this hot topic and so I am inclined to think they cut the proverbial rug at home). Most importantly they believe with all their hearts they have found true LIFE and that this true LIFE is named Jesus Christ. I agree.

In short...they are on the same journey I am on and that makes us friends.

I want to invite you to journey with us a while on this blog. No strings attached. Simply relax with coffee and laptop and enjoy the ride. The best is yet to come.

Hey Charles! New blog, hey? You better get posting! :) It sounds like things are going well over there in Oregon. I'm enjoying the summer off from law school, and also looking forward to getting back at it in the fall. Liezl just got a brand-new, full time job as an administrative assistant with a company, and she's really enjoying that. All in all, God has continued to be very, very good to us in our time here in Fredericton.

If I could recommend something back at you (referring to your recent email here), it would be a biography: "George Whitefield" by Arnold Dallimore. It's considered (by Martyn Lloyd Jones) to be the definitive biography on Whitefield, and gives a fascinating history of the Great Awakening as well. It's been amazing to read of what God did then. It helps me to understand what authentic revival looks like. Talk about a life sold out for God. A flawed man, but a great and Godly one who followed Jesus with all his heart.

I think you'll like that one! I'm working on the second volume right now - the biography is over a thousand pages in two volumes, so it's not a shallow treatment of the man.

Hi James,

Man you guys are missed. Would love to steep myself in some good puritan reads write now and hope to incorporate J. Edwards contributions into my Dissertation. I will certainly pick up the biography on Whitefield. If M. Lloyd-Jones has this to say about it must be an amazing read. Its my understanding that Whitefield was an incredible preacher and used by God in an amazing way. I'll have to dig in. I am currently reading books on:

Spiritual Formation
Biblical Narrative
Organic Discipleship
Sunday Schools systems (and why the fail)
Scripture itself.

Keep looking in my friend! I have to get up your way sometime.
